- this week: two nice modern traditional releases from Denmark and Norway, my favourite German songwriter Stoppok, another great track from my CD of the month, "African Scream Contest - Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds from Berlin & Togo 70s", and a feature on the late great Tim Hardin with a story attached: Sometime in 1978 I chanced upon him, much to my surprise, in my local pub in the bedsit wilderlands of West Kensington, where he was hanging out with the local bikers. An agent friend introduced me and I ended up playing a gig with him at Dingwalls in Camden Lock. There were no rehearsals but I was a fan and knew all his songs anyway. We raced through his repertoire of greatest hits and then embarked on a marathon blues jam. He was not an easy character to get on with - I believe he was at the time on a methadone program - and he seemed not to care about anything except the next drink. But around this time he started to write some songs with my friend Jim Cuomo and the following year they went off to LA to record a new album. Tim was apparently somewhat cleaned up and upbeat but one day he didn't show up to the studio. He had overdosed the night before having met up with an old "friend". A tragic figure who not only never got the recognition he deserved but apparently never got the money he should have so I heard, having sold his most lucrative publishing rights to sustain his heroin habit. A salutary tale. RIP Tim Hardin.
